Every year on December 3rd, the world comes together to recognize the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). Established by the United Nations, this day promotes understanding of disability issues and mobilizes support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. It’s also a time to celebrate the contributions and achievements of individuals living with disabilities in every community.
The theme for IDPD emphasizes inclusion, accessibility, and empowerment—values that resonate deeply with us at Community Futures Alberta.
Why This Day Matters
Globally, more than one billion people live with some form of disability. In rural Alberta, entrepreneurs with disabilities face unique challenges, from limited access to resources to navigating health barriers while running a business. IDPD reminds us that inclusion isn’t just a principle—it’s a practice that strengthens communities and economies.
How the Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Program (EDP) Supports Inclusion
The Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Program (EDP) exists to ensure that rural entrepreneurs with disabilities, chronic health conditions, or neurodivergence have the tools and support they need to succeed. Through Community Futures offices across Alberta, EDP provides:
- One-on-one business coaching tailored to your goals and abilities
- Access to resources and training for marketing, planning, and technology
- Financial supports, including one-time Technology and Training Stipends to help cover essential tools and learning
- A safe, inclusive space to learn and grow—because your business should fit your life, not the other way around
Our coaches and coordinators work closely with entrepreneurs to build confidence, clarity, and strategies that work for them.
Ways Your Organization Can Celebrate IDPD
Want to show your support for inclusion and accessibility? Here are a few simple ideas:
- Share a post on social media acknowledging IDPD and highlighting your commitment to accessibility.
- Feature a success story from an entrepreneur with a disability (like those in our EDP program).
- Review your business for accessibility—small changes like clearer signage or online booking options can make a big difference.
- Read this blog—and link it to your own website or social accounts.
- Start a conversation with your team or community about inclusion and how you can do more.
