Late spring brings important disability awareness initiatives across Alberta and Canada. Throughout May and early June, organizations and communities are coming together to recognize contributions, raise awareness, and encourage more inclusive approaches to work, community life, and economic participation.
For rural Albertans with disabilities, these initiatives provide a timely reminder that inclusion matters everywhere—and that rural communities thrive when people with diverse experiences are supported to pursue their goals, including entrepreneurship.
Community Disability Services Professionals Appreciation Week
May 18–24, 2026
Community Disability Services (CDS) Professionals Appreciation Week, led by the Alberta Disability Workers Association (ADWA), recognizes the professionals who support people with disabilities to live self‑directed, meaningful lives across the province.
In rural and smaller communities, CDS professionals often play a particularly important role. They help individuals navigate services, build skills, access opportunities, and remove barriers—supporting everything from daily living to employment and community participation. Their work strengthens local capacity and helps ensure rural Albertans with disabilities can pursue opportunities aligned with their interests and strengths.

National AccessAbility Week
May 31 – June 6, 2026
Immediately following is National AccessAbility Week (NAAW), a Canada‑wide initiative focused on accessibility, inclusion, and recognizing the achievements of people with disabilities. Supported by organizations such as the Neil Squire Society, the week invites individuals, communities, and employers to take practical action toward reducing barriers.
National AccessAbility Week features a range of activities, including virtual events, community challenges, and opportunities to learn from people with lived experience. For rural communities, the flexible and online nature of many activities makes participation more accessible, regardless of location or community size.

Awareness, Access, and Rural Entrepreneurship
Disability awareness initiatives help create space for important conversations—not just about inclusion, but about opportunity.
For many rural Albertans with disabilities, small business ownership can offer flexibility, autonomy, and control over work environments. Entrepreneurship allows individuals to design businesses that work with their health, energy, and accessibility needs, while remaining rooted in their local communities.
As disability awareness grows across Alberta and Canada this spring, it’s a natural time to consider how inclusive economic opportunities—especially in rural areas—can support long‑term community sustainability.
Supporting Rural Entrepreneurs Through Community Futures
At Community Futures, we are proud to work alongside organizations across Alberta that are advancing accessibility and inclusion in their own ways. While the initiatives highlighted here are led by partner organizations, they align with a shared goal: supporting people with disabilities to participate fully in their communities and local economies.
The Rural Alberta Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Program (EDP) supports rural individuals who are exploring or pursuing self‑employment. The program offers:
- One‑to‑one business coaching
- Practical support through business planning and start‑up
- Guidance that recognizes disability‑related and health‑related barriers
- Connections to Community Futures offices across rural Alberta
As Alberta marks disability awareness throughout May and early June, it’s a great time for rural persons with disabilities to consider whether entrepreneurship could be part of their path forward.
