Many people have an idea they've been quietly turning over for months: a skill they could charge for, a hobby that could earn some income, or a service their community needs. What often holds them back isn't the idea itself. It's not knowing where to start, or worrying that starting a business means taking on more than they can manage.
That's exactly what the 2026 Side Hustle Summit is designed to address.
Hosted by Community Futures West Yellowhead and sponsored by the Rural Alberta Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Program (EDP), this half-day event in Hinton will help you explore flexible ways to earn income that fit your life, skills, and goals.
Be inspired. Build your plan. Launch your future.

Who the Summit Is For
The summit welcomes anyone curious about side hustles, self-employment, or creating an extra stream of income. It has been designed with a broad audience in mind, including:
- People with disabilities, long-term health conditions, or neurodivergence
- Youth and students
- Job seekers
- Caregivers
- Creatives and professionals exploring a new direction
You don't need a fully formed business idea to attend. If you're simply wondering whether self-employment could work for you, this is a good place to find out.
What to Expect
A keynote on building a business that fits your life. Guest speaker Michelle MacNeil, a Systems Business and EDP Coach, will challenge the traditional picture of entrepreneurship. Her message: a business doesn't have to be big, risky, or all-consuming. You can start with a problem you know how to solve, start smaller than you think, and build something that suits your actual life.
A panel of local and provincial supports. Hear from organizations that help people build skills, find resources, and start businesses, including:
- STEP-UP Employment Services, on how workplace skills and networks can lead to self-employment
- Voice of Albertans with Disabilities (VAD), on inclusive and accessible business practices
- HANDS (Hinton Abilities Network & Development Society), on community-driven support for entrepreneurs of all abilities
- ATB Financial, on financing and building long-term financial success
- Business Link
A hands-on workshop to finish the day. The afternoon closes with an interactive session where you'll create your own one-page business plan. You'll leave with something concrete to build on, not just a page of notes.
Why EDP Is Supporting This Event
EDP's Special Projects help Community Futures offices across rural Alberta create learning opportunities that make entrepreneurship more accessible. Events like the Side Hustle Summit bring practical information, local supports, and real conversations about business ownership directly into rural communities.
For many entrepreneurs, a side hustle is a sensible way to begin. It lets you test an idea, build confidence, and grow at a pace that matches your energy and circumstances, without having to commit to everything at once.
