Starting or growing a business is exciting, but it can feel overwhelming if you’re not sure what the process looks like. At the Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Program (EDP), we provide individualized coaching to support you. Here’s what you can expect when you apply:
Step 1: Eligibility Check & First Connection
Your journey begins with a quick Eligibility Check on our website. This helps confirm you meet the basic criteria:
✔ You live in rural Alberta
✔ You have a self-declared disability, long-term health condition, or neurodivergence
✔ You want to start or grow a business
Next, connect with your local Community Futures office.
- Use our Find Your Local Office tool to locate the office nearest you.
- Reach out and let them know you’re interested in EDP.
Prefer us to guide you? Fill out the Contact Form, and we’ll connect you with the right office for personalized support.
Step 2: Meeting Your EDP Coordinator
At your Community Futures office, you’ll likely chat with one of our EDP Coordinators.
- They’ll learn about your business idea and goals.
- Then, they’ll ask you to complete a Participation Agreement.
This agreement gives us permission to move forward and explains the details of the program so you know what to expect.
Step 3: Discovery Call & Coaching Plan
Next, your EDP Coordinator will help match you with the EDP Coach who best suits your needs.
- You’ll have a free Discovery Call with your coach to discuss:
✔ Your business vision
✔ Challenges you’re facing
✔ What kind of coaching support will help most - Together, you’ll create a Coaching Plan, including the number and duration of sessions (usually 6-8)
- The coach submits this plan to your EDP Coordinator, who now has everything needed to complete your application and send it for approval.
Step 4: Approval & Coaching Begins
Approval for coaching comes quickly—usually within 48 hours.
- Once approved, you’re ready to start!
- All coaching is free of charge and focuses on the Coaching Package you selected during your Discovery Call.
- All coaching is online.
- You must attend all scheduled sessions to remain eligible for the program
Our coaches are independent professionals whose goal is not only to provide great support but also to help build your confidence and set you up for success.
Step 5: Wrap-Up & Next Steps
After your coaching is completed, your EDP Coordinator will reach out to see how it worked for you and whether you need further sessions. If you do, you’ll work with a coach to create a new Coaching Plan
- You can apply for up to two coaching packages per fiscal year (April 1 – March 31) while funding is available.
- If you need additional support, we’ll guide you through the next steps.
- Your Coordinator will also explain what additional Community Futures resources are available in your region including lending options and/or further training.
